We usually see them on our feeders in pairs, but today they were around in force - all fully grown adults and no fledgelings this time.

Goldfinch
Over the last few years the goldfinch population around Stoke-on-Trent has been expanding. At one time they were a rare bird to see and now they are an everyday sight.
They usually just take niger seeds, but this bunch were happy to eat sunflower hearts. They usually stay and feed until they are satisfied and nothing but a sparrowhawk will shift them.
Job done and off they go. You can see why they are called goldfinches when they open out their wings.

Gosh you are so lucky to have so many wonderful little visitors! I'd been longing to see one of these for ages then a couple of years ago down in Shenstone, I saw quite a few and now I see them around quite often. We even had two on the front lawn of our flats the other day which to my knowledge is a first.
