Dabchicks

The little grebe is a fascinating bird.  When they are seen at this time of year, they are always in pairs.  Their distinct sharp and warbling call stands out amongst other birds.
These 'Dabchicks' are noticeably found on the Cromford Canal every year, and an annual pilgrimage to see them is always rewarding.  We have also seen them at Trentham Lakes outside of the breeding season.
Strolling down the canal, we spotted a dipper on a rock, from the canal viaduct to the river below.  These birds are much bigger than the dabchicks and are hunting for different food resources.
The dabchicks are hunting for Small fish which are abundant in the canal.  Just occasionally we see a successful hunt being consumed near the canal bank.
