The heat is biting

When we woke up this morning at 6:30 am, I checked the thermostat and it was reading a room temperature of 26 degrees Centigrade. The heating was set to 15 degrees.  Usually at this time of year the night temperature is around 12 degrees.  Going into the conservatory, the wall thermometer was on 24 degrees.  UK houses are designed to retain heat in the winter, this is clearly a disadvantage in unusually hot weather.

Doors and windows wide open to let out the heat for a while, then windows and curtains closed.  The Gazebo was moved from the lawn to the patio area to help shade the conservatory and kitchen windows. I would love to attach a tarpaulin over the conservatory, but I do not have a suitable temporary fixing at present.
The sunflowers, which I grew from the seed saved from last years plants, are doing very well in  this warm weather.  Most of the garden is parched and dry.
I have started to remove the top growth on our wild meadow areas, but have stopped at 20% having seen how dry the lower growth and soil is.  I Shall mow the areas where we have sufficient flowers when it is cooler and we have had some rain.  Only the food plants and more precious pot plants are being watered at present. This heatwave looks as if it is going to last some time.
